November 4, 2012 - Jersey Shore Flight post Hurricane Sandy

Hurricane Sandy hit the Jersey Shore pretty hard earlier in the week so I decided to check it out.  I flew down to Easton, met Mugsy, and then he and I headed east.

Mugsy had just put a second injector on his smoke system; here he is testing it out.  Looks good to me.

We also flew over the famous Punkin Chunkin world championship event.   In the unlikely event that you have not heard about it -- as a matter of fact I had never heard of it -- that's where pumpkin-throwing enthusaists compete with each other, throwing pumpkins with catapults as far as they can.

We crossed the Delaware Bay between Point Lewes and Cape May, then proceeded north along the Jersey Shore.

I was amazed this roller coaster survived the storm.  Check out the two sail-cars cruising the wide beach below.

Although we did see heavy equipment on the beach in spots, we really didn't see any obvious damage south of Atlantic City.

I think we were just too high and going too fast to see the damage.

I had read that Lucy the Elephant had survived the hurricane and there she is.  Check out the heavy equipment to the left moving sand around.

The Atlantic City boardwalk ends here.  It looks undamaged to me.

Approaching Atlantic City.

Passing by Bader Field, which is now closed.

Mugsy took this shot of me approaching Atlantic City.  Even though we were over the water, because AC juts out into the ocean, it looks like I am making a torpedo approach on the Trump Taj Mahal.

Again, I was amazed this pier amusement park survived the storm.

I had thought the AC boardwalk was destroyed, but it looks OK here.

The first obvious damage I saw:  a segment of the road that was pushed inland.

We continued north a little further.

North of AC is an unpopulated area that is fun to fly around.

My wingman is still with me.  He must have seen Top Gun:  "Never, never leave your wingman".

I was Lead heading north.  Mugsy was Lead heading south.

Approaching Cape May the skies darkened and there was rain to the west.

It's just more fun flying with another airplane.

Climbing as we cross the Delaware Bay.

Back over the Eastern Shore, Mugsy can't resist showing off his upgraded smoke system.

Soon after reaching the Eastern Shore, we separate and head our separate ways for home.

Crossing the Chesapeake Bay with the Bay Bridge visible to the south.

Before landing, I couldn't resist yanking and banking a little over Miller's Island.

The foliage was well past peak, but with my amber-colored Serengeti sunglasses, it was still pretty.  The camera doesn't capture what I saw through the Sergenteis though.

Driving home from Essex Skypark, I tried to capture the sunset while crossing the Francis Scott Key Bridge

That's a little better, but as usual the camera doesn't capture how pretty it was.  Or more likely, the photographer's skills are lacking!
